Porcelain Crown

For instance, decay and dental injury may have left the tooth weakened and susceptible to further damage. Crowns are also useful in holding a dental bridge in place or replacing a missing tooth, where you can also use it to cover a dental implant. There are numerous materials that can be used for dental crowns, though porcelain is the most preferred for cosmetic reasons. We have several options for porcelain crowns available at Leavenworth Family Dental.

Benefits of Porcelain

Porcelain provides a great alternative to gold and resin crowns. It is less expensive than gold and more durable than resin. It is also nice for people who cannot handle metal crowns due to allergies or sensitivity. Most importantly for cosmetic purposes, porcelain is able to blend very well with the natural tooth. Though it is not as strong as gold, it is preferred for front teeth for aesthetic reasons.

Types of Crowns

There are several types of crowns available. First, you can get a traditional, or same-day crown. Traditional crowns can take a couple of weeks to process but tend to be a better fit and look for your mouth. Same-day crowns, however, let you complete the treatment and restoration on the same day. So, if you do not want to wait, same-day crowns would be your best choice. For traditional crowns, you would also get a temporary crown placement while waiting for your permanent crown to arrive.

Crowns also come in different sizes. For instance, you can get a full crown, which means that the entire toothcap must be replaced. An onlay, or three-quarter crown, is used when there is still some of the tooth surface remaining. Onlays cover the cusp (chewing surface) of the tooth but do not replace the entire tooth.

Procedure

For traditional crowns, your first visit would involve the treatment of your dental condition. This could include anesthesia if necessary, which is typically the case for fillings and root canals. The tooth that will get the crown is then prepared. This involves reshaping the tooth and preparing the surface so that the crown can easily attach. If you have lost a tooth, this first appointment may also involve the placement of a dental implant.

Our dentist will take a dental impression on your first visit and give it to our dental lab. The lab will produce a permanent crown based on this dental impression. Once they send it to us, we will give you a call to schedule a placement.

At the second visit, we will remove the temporary crown received at the first visit. Our dentist will place the permanent crown and check the fit. We will reshape it and polish it if necessary so that it blends with your other, natural teeth. After this, we ensure that it stays in place with a permanent dental cement.
