Dentistry for KidsYour child's oral health is critically important for maintaining long term overall health. As a parent, you will need to guide them on proper dental hygiene until they are able to complete these tasks on their own. In addition, you will need to bring them into our office for routine check-ups and maintenance. At Leavenworth Family Dental, we provide many necessary pediatric dentistry services such as cleanings, fluoride, and orthodontics. Home CareBefore your baby even has teeth, you will need to make sure you keep their mouth clean. After every meal, whether it is a bottle or solid food, gently wipe their gums using a moist cloth or gauze. Brush baby teeth using warm water without fluoride and a pea-sized drop of toothpaste until they are six months old. You can begin using fluoride at this point. Encourage your child to brush their own teeth when they are coordinated enough to do so. Also, replace their toothbrush every two to three months. Brush their teeth twice a day and after medication administration. Some medications have ingredients that can damage the enamel if they linger. Routine Cleaning and TreatmentYou should begin bringing your child in for routine cleanings every six months as soon as they get their first tooth. During the first visit, we will give you advice on maintaining their oral hygiene. We will also establish a long-term professional cleaning plan. Dental cleanings in children are similar to that of adults. These begin with scaling, which is the use of a dental instrument called a scaler that removes plaque and tartar from your child's teeth. During these cleaning appointments, we will also brush and floss your child's teeth. We also offer dental sealants, which are used to protect your child's teeth from common conditions such as cavities. Our office offers fluoride treatment to supplement a child's typical diet since many kids do not get the amount of fluoride they should. This may be administered topically or in a pill (prescription medication or supplement). Our pediatric dentistry services include dental x-rays as well. These let us monitor dental development in your child and detect any underlying issues. The frequency of these x-rays will depend on your child's medical history. OrthodonticsOrthodontic treatment is very common among children. Many types of dental equipment are used for kids to treat a number of conditions. For instance, malformed bites (over, under, cross, open) and midlines, as well as crowding complications, can be treated using braces or a similar orthodontic treatment. Braces generally take between one to three years to correct these issues. Your child may also be a good candidate for aligners or have a need for retainers. Many of our pediatric patients are involved in sports, which is why we also offer custom mouthguards. These help to protect your child's teeth as well as reduce the impact of head and neck injuries. We also have nightguards available to treat teeth grinding and sleep apnea. Of course, we will also give you information on cleaning and maintaining this equipment should your child need any of it.
