Dental VeneersDental veneers are a cosmetic procedure available to fix common issues such as discoloration, chips, gaps, and other minor abnormalities in the appearance of your teeth. There are a couple of different types of veneers available, which we can discuss with you at Leavenworth Family Dental. We can place them for you and then give you advice on how to maintain their condition. Types of VeneersThere are a variety of veneers for you to choose from. Veneers can be either porcelain (ceramic) or composite resin. Porcelain veneers are the most popular choice for their appearance and durability. These are totally customized and last between 10 to 15 years. Composite resin veneers require less wait time, but they are much more fragile than porcelain veneers. Composite resin veneers will generally last between five and seven years. In addition to the different materials available, there are also a few different styles of veneers. Palatal veneers, which are also called palatal onlays, are used in the restoration of anterior teeth. These can become damaged due to bruxism (teeth grinding), decay, and other dental issues. You can also get removable veneers, which are much less invasive and cheaper than traditional veneers. These can be taken off whenever you want. Veneer PlacementIn general, you should expect three appointments for this process. For your first visit, our dentist will talk to you about the different veneers we have available. They will examine your teeth and take dental x-rays to ensure that your teeth are healthy enough to support veneers. They will also get a dental impression of your teeth. The dental lab uses this to make custom veneers. At the second appointment, our dentist will prepare your teeth for the placement procedure. Our dentist will use a local anesthetic so that they can comfortably trim your enamel. This is removed to make way for the veneer. About 0.5 mm will be taken off, though this may be less depending on the specific style or brand of veneer that you receive. Our dentist will then get another dental impression to send to the lab. You may receive temporary veneers to cover the teeth while you wait for the permanent restoration. After about two to four weeks, we will receive your permanent veneers. At this final appointment, our dentist will place the veneers and check for the proper fit. We can reshape the veneers at this point if necessary. Our dentist will roughen the tooth surface after cleaning and polishing. This gives the veneer an easy surface to adhere to. We ensure it stays in place with the use of dental cement. We use a special light on the cement which triggers a chemical reaction, causing it to instantly harden. Our dentist will finalize the procedure by shaving off any excess cement and making any final adjustments needed. We may ask you to come in for a follow-up appointment after a few weeks to ensure that the veneers and gums are in good condition. We do this to ensure you do not have a negative reaction and that the veneers are not damaged. Call Leavenworth Family Dental at 913-682-1550 to get your veneers today. |
