Dental Exam

Young man smiling while leaning against a wallDental exams generally occur at the same appointment as routine cleanings, which is recommended every six months. After our dental hygienist has scaled, brushed, and flossed your teeth, our dentist will meet with you for a final review of your teeth to discuss any findings. They will check development in younger patients and discuss any concerns that came up during the cleaning. They will also check for any signs of oral cancer and any other issues with surrounding tissue. At Leavenworth Family Dental, we offer comprehensive exams to ensure great overall health.

Cleaning

Our dental hygienist will begin by scaling your teeth, which is when they use a scaler to remove plaque. After this, they will brush your teeth using an electric toothbrush and floss them using regular dental floss. You will also get a chance to rinse your mouth after this. We may include fluoride treatment at this time as well if needed, though this is more commonly used for younger patients.

Examination of Teeth

Our dentist will initially perform a basic visual check of your teeth. They may do some light cleaning if any plaque or other debris was missed. During your dental exam, our dentist will check for cavities and check your bite. This may involve the use of a special colored paper or even a wax. They may also take dental x-rays, which typically occur every other appointment (yearly). At this time, our dentist will inform you of any cavities or other tooth damage that must be treated. Our dentist will talk about any noticeable signs of gum disease at this time as well. Some of these symptoms include inflammation, bleeding, and a receding gum line.

Other Components

In addition to examining the health of your teeth, our dentist will also check for signs of oral cancer. Some symptoms include sores, discoloration, loss of mobility, pain, and numbness. Our dentist may also check the soft tissues surrounding your oral cavity (face and neck) and your jaw joint to ensure there are no issues. This may also involve diagnostic imaging such as dental X-rays. These help to detect underlying issues and allow our dentist to observe development and any changes in the dental structure.

Our dentist will also look at any dental devices you may use, including both removable and fixed restorations. For instance, they will check to ensure dentures, crowns, fillings, and other pieces are in good condition. If you have a mouthguard, you should also bring it to your appointment so we can check the fit and condition.

Consultation

Once the exam is complete, our dentist will address any concerns noted by either you or our dental team. You will discuss any follow-up diagnostics needed as well as a treatment plan. This may include referral to a specialist, additional appointments at our office, medication, dental equipment, or other home therapy. Our dentist will also go over oral hygiene tips so that you can keep your teeth in great shape until we see you next time.
