Dental Bonding

Patient looking at their teeth with their dentistDental bonding is a cosmetic procedure available to restore a variety of dental conditions. Because it is so versatile and budget-friendly, this is a preferred cosmetic procedure among many of our patients. Not only is this an inexpensive procedure compared to some of the alternatives, but it is also very simple and easy to care for following the procedure. You can contact Leavenworth Family Dental to schedule a dental bonding procedure.

Uses for Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is completed using a composite resin, which is a putty-like plastic material that can harden to bond with the tooth. There are a number of different uses for this procedure such as repairing decay, chips, and cracks, improving tooth discoloration, changing the shape or length of the teeth, and protecting the tooth when patients have a receding gum line.

Dental Bonding Procedure

The first step of your bonding procedure will depend on what your specific concern is. For instance, if it is being used to fill a cavity, then the decayed tooth must first be treated. Our dentist will drill out any decayed material and clean the cavity of debris. We would then fill it using the composite resin. Anesthesia can be used if necessary, but usually is not for this procedure.

Prior to administering the composite resin, our dentist will use a shade comparison chart to select the best choice to blend with your natural tooth. The tooth surface must first be roughened a bit to provide good support for the resin. After the resin is applied, our dentist will mold and smooth it out so that it perfectly matches the shape of your natural tooth. Once this is complete, we use a special light or laser which is blue in color to harden the material. This light activates a chemical reaction in the composite resin that causes it to harden instantly. It will feel as if it is part of your natural tooth and you will not be able to tell the difference.

The time frame for this procedure depends on the preparation, with more serious conditions taking longer to treat. In general, you should expect this procedure to take only between 30 to 60 minutes. Dental bonding has a fairly long lifespan, though this depends on your habits and oral health. Composite resin tends to last between three and 10 years.

Maintenance

Oral hygiene with bonded teeth is the exact same as it is with natural teeth. You will still brush twice daily using regular toothpaste and also floss at least once a day. You should also come into our office for routine visits every six months. At this point, our dentist will check the condition to ensure that the composite resin is still intact. This can be easily touched up at any time if there ever is damage that occurs.

Before you leave, we will give you some tips for keeping the composite resin intact for a longer time. For instance, biting hard can damage the resin over time. Due to issues with biting hard foods, you may want to avoid it or be more conscious of your eating habits. This material can also be stained over time, so try to avoid pigmented foods as well.
